(Hooking up all electrical functions in the steering column)

This section is to be followed if you are assembling your car from a deluxe stage Montage kit. (Deluxe stage has all the instrumentation switches and lighting systems pre-wired at the factory.) If you are assembling your kit from the Builder’s stage kit, refer to the Montage VW portion of the assembly and diagrams. This will help you get your car in a Deluxe condition electrically. The functions covered in this section are the ignition, turn signals, emergency flashers, radiator fan, horn, air conditioning (if used), and radio (if used).

Ignition

The ignition switch on top of the steering column has a series of male spade connectors on it. If you inspect it very closely, they are all marked just below each spade. Usually, if a General Motors tilt column is used, the first vertical row from the top to bottom is marked:

S-1 (starter).....Hookup #23 Red 12 gauge wire
B-1 (battery)....Hookup #1 Red 10 gauge wire
I-1 (ignition).....Hookup #2 Yellow 16 gauge wire
Directly behind that row there is a post behind B-1 marked B-2. This post can be used for any extra function you wish, but should be used with an on-off switch and inline fuse system. This is a direct power and won’t turn off with the key.

The next post back on top is marked accessory. Attach the red 12 gauge wire marked #40 to this post. The #40 wire is the power to the accessory side of the fuse block. Number 23 red is the power to the ignition side of the fuse block.

Next, the wire plug connected to the wire grouping that comes out of the steering column is where the wires for your other light functions are located (i.e. turn indicators, emergency flashers, etc.)

1. The purple wire marked (L) on the plug is the power source to the turn signals.

2. The green wire marked (N) is your right hand turn signal.

3. The black wire with a blue stripe marked (H) is the left hand turn signal.

4. The blue wire marked (J) is the power to the emergency flashers.

5. The black wire marked (G) is the wire to your horn. (We suggest using a horn relay switch in-line)

6. Hook up the fan for the radiator on a spade connector on the ignition side of the fuse block.

7. Air conditioning - Can be hooked up on the loose power wire behind the dash next to the temperature gauge. (This wire is a pigtail wire from the lights on the temperature gauge) Use an in-line fuse supplied with the air conditioning / heater package.

8. Radio - Hook up to the accessory side of the fuse block. Or, if hooked up to a direct power source, use and in-line fuse.

This should complete all under dash electrical hookups.
